London born Michael David Rock studied modern languages at Cambridge University, graduating in the late 60s with a fascination for faces and rock & roll. His earliest key subject was Pink Floyd's legendary Syd Barrett.
In 1972, Mick Rock met David Bowie just before he took the music world by storm with his Ziggy Stardust persona. Mick became his official photographer, and was soon the favorite lensman of Lou Reed, Iggy Pop and Queen. Other subjects included in Mick Rock's exhibition include the Ramones, Debbie Harry, The New York Dolls, Mick Ronson, Ray Davies, Ozzie Osbourne, Thin Lizzie and more.
In the late 70s Mick moved his studio to New York City where he still lives and works. His photographs have come to be considered among the finest images chronicling the period in rock & roll popularly known as glam.
Lou Reed stated, "Mick was there and was so much part of things that it was quite natural to have him snapping away and think of him as invisible. Although I'm sure Rock thought of himself as an outsider photographer, everyone else thought of him as just another leg on the animal called rock".
