From the beginning, Marshall trained his camera on what was to become his exclusive subject, the documentation of people. And his response - both emotional and photographic - was strongest to musicians.

Since then, Marshall has photographed the world's preeminent jazz, country, folk, blues and rock musicians, always with the greatest respect and affection. Mick Jagger, Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix; John Coltrane, Miles Davis and Carlos Santana - all have graciously collaborated in the making of a Marshall photograph.

He was the chief photographer at the Monterey Pop Festival and Woodstock, the only photographer granted backstage access at the Beatles' last concert, the only photographer to squeeze Janis Joplin and Grace Slick into a single frame.

The result is a body of Work in which each picture describes the musician's character rather than Marshall's ego. And if the pictures themselves seem musical, seem almost to sing, it's not by accident. Jim says simply, "I see the music. Sadly, Jim passed away in March, 2010.
